SUMMARY:Service of Compassion and Hope
DESCRIPTION:A Service of Compassion and Hope\n\n\nCentral Union Church will offer a Service of Compassion and Hope on the Winter Solstice\, the Longest Night\, Sunday\, December 21st at 6:30 pm in Atherton Memorial Chapel.\n\nThis service is especially for those in the community who need the space to grieve\, mourn\, or simply “be” – especially when the joy of the holiday season is elusive and out of reach.\n\nIn past years\, like many churches during the Advent season\, we’ve held a “Blue Christmas” service. Similarly\, this service is designed to provide space for prayer\, reflection\, and remembrance amidst the twinkling lights and holiday hustle and bustle.\n\nIn this season\, we acknowledge the grief and exhaustion that so many of us are feeling with all that is going on in the world and in our own personal lives. Bring your grief. Bring your weariness. Bring your fatigue. Allow yourself a quiet space to reflect and draw nearer to God.\n\nWe hope that this service can be a gift to individuals and to our community alike\, providing a space of calm\, quiet\, and healing for the journey.

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Why Vaccines Are Vital
DESCRIPTION:Attend this informative presentation on the importance of vaccines as vaccine requirements are being changed. Know someone unsure of vaccines? Invite them to address their questions and concerns. \nShould I get vaccinated? Should I believe the protestations by Robert Kennedy Jr.\, Secretary of Health and Human Services? Should I believe the info I see online\, on social media? What’s the real science behind vaccines? Bring your concerns\, questions\, and fears and learn about how vaccines have changed the course of history of infectious diseases and saved hundreds of millions of lives. \nJoe Elm will share his 50 years of medical and scientific experience in The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Leahi Hospital; the Department of Tropical Medicine in the John A. Burns School of Medicine; and the Disease Investigation Branch at the Hawaii State Department of Health. \nThe following testimony is from a concerned mother and grandmother who shares her perspective on the importance of vaccines: \n\nSubacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis — You haven’t heard of this disease\, even though it occurs in developing countries\, because we haven’t had it in the U.S. for over half a century because we have vaccines! \nIt is fatal and has no cure. It has no treatment (except a few to temporarily relieve symptoms). The disease generally occurs in children and adolescents. \nHowever\, it is totally preventable with measles vaccines given in infancy. With recent changes to federal vaccine recommendations for entering school\, we can expect this disease to start appearing in the U.S. in about ten years (in unvaccinated children who are babies right now). \nThe infection usually begins in infancy but doesn’t show symptoms until about age 10. The brain is affected and the child deteriorates over the following few years\, generally dying in their teenage years. \nIf the mandatory measles vaccine is not reinstated now\, we can expect to see Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis appearing in the U.S. in about 2035. \nSuch a preventable tragedy of the most horrific kind.

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday Service
DESCRIPTION:Ash Wednesday begins the season of Lent which are the forty days of preparation before Holy Week and Easter. In Scripture\, forty is a sacred number: Noah’s days in the ark\, Israel’s years in the wilderness\, and Jesus’ forty days of testing and grounding before his ministry. \n\n\nLent invites us into our own forty‑day renewal – a “springtime” of the spirit – through prayer\, reflection\, and acts of compassion. The ashes\, often made from burning last year’s Palm Sunday palms\, are an ancient sign of repentance and a reminder of our mortality. They tell the truth: we are dust. And yet\, in God’s hands\, dust is beloved and full of possibility. Receiving ashes tonight is not about shame\, but about grace. It reminds us that God’s love is stronger than sin and death\, and that in Christ\, God stays in communion with us – breathing new life into every place that feels fragile or worn. So we begin Lent with honesty\, hope\, and trust that resurrection is already on its way. \n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \n\nEvery year\, the congregations of the United Church of Christ joins Christians around the world in marking Ash Wednesday  not as a day of shame\, but as a day of truth-telling and hope. The ashes we receive often come from burning the palms from last year’s Palm Sunday as a beautiful reminder that our celebrations and our failures\, our highs and our lows\, all become part of the journey God uses to shape us. The ashes remind us of something honest: we are human. We are finite. We are dust. And yet we are beloved dust. Formed by God\, held by God\, and invited into transformation.  \n\n\nIn the UCC\, Ash Wednesday isn’t about fear of judgment. It’s about opening our hearts. It’s about naming the places where we’ve fallen short\, both personally and collectively\, and trusting that God’s grace is already at work\, healing and renewing. We enter Lent not to earn God’s love\, but to remember we already have it. The ashes mark the beginning of a journey: a journey toward justice\, compassion\, and deeper alignment with the way of Jesus. On Ash Wednesday\, we wear ashes not as a burden\, but as a blessing. A reminder that God meets us in our humanity and calls us into new life.

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Wai Nau
DESCRIPTION:Please join our World Missions Ministry and wider community for this special presentation! \nRepresentatives from Wai Nau Aloha for Palestine Water Project will share their ongoing mutual aid project in Gaza\, detailing the current conditions of people internally displaced by the Zionist occupation. We will get to hear directly from people on the ground in Gaza and learn how we can offer support to Gazans through this grassroots effort led in part by O‘ahu residents. \nCUC World Missions Ministry has chosen Wai Nau as the recipient of their portion of the 2025 Christmas offering. \n\n\n\n\nThis project aligns with the Ministry’s mission to send money/goods/missionaries throughout the world to spread Christ’s Gospel; to educate; to create partnerships by acts of outreach nurtured with prayers\, concerns\, and encouragement. It also is a faithful response to recent resolutions from our wider church: “A Call to Education and Action Regarding the Crisis in Gaza” (affirmed by the 2024 ‘Aha Pae‘āina of the Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ) and “Declaration for an End to Genocide in Palestine” (affirmed by the 2025 General Synod of the United Church of Christ). \nThis is an opportunity to act on these resolutions\, live out our faith\, and learn how our offerings will be used to help our neighbors. Your mere attendance is a sign of solidarity in the willingness to bear witness to not only the suffering of our neighbors\, but also their resilience and resistance; and to support and encourage life-affirming work.

SUMMARY:Community Vigil for Peace
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS BEING POSTPONED.\nDue to the severe weather being experienced and expected across the island\, we have decided to postpone our community vigil out of an abundance of caution and desire for our communities to safely access and participate in the gathering.\nMarking the Deaths of Those Killed in Gaza\nThis interfaith service will center around a speaking of the names of children killed in Gaza\, interspersed with prayers and readings by representatives of various faith traditions. Children make up a large percentage of the death toll in Gaza which surpassed 75\,000 a year ago and is rising still\, even after a ceasefire was declared last October. While focusing on Gaza\, there will also be wider calls for peace and justice in the world. \nWe are called to “Weep with those who weep” (Romans 12:15). \nAll people of conscience are welcome. \nPlease join us in solidarity on Saturday\, March 14\, from 3-6 PM in the Sanctuary or online. Come and leave as you need. \nIf you are coming in person and willing to help speak aloud some of the names (to be read from a provided list)\, there may be an opportunity to participate in this way. \nMay our grief be transformed into collective action for peace and justice.\nOrganized by Faith Action for Community Equity\, Central Union Church\, Hawai‘i Quaker Friends Committee on National Legislation. \nContact: kristen-young@centralunionchurch.org \nNOTE: Severe weather is expected across the islands over the next few days. Heavy rain\, possible flash flooding\, strong winds\, and thunderstorms are on the forecast through the weekend. We will monitor the storm and make the call to continue or cancel/reschedule the vigil on Saturday morning. Please stay safe. \n

SUMMARY:Service of Healing & Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the third Sunday of the month for this special\, intimate\, and contemplative service in the Iona tradition. Too often in our living we struggle with woundedness – whether of the body\, of the mind\, or of the spirit. \nCome and discover a place of healing for your soul rooted in the traditions of the Scottish island of Iona where Celtic Christianity flourishes. The service will include music from the Taizé community\, prayer\, silence\, and the ritual of the laying on of hands. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Evening Lenten Book Study: Inspired
DESCRIPTION:Lenten Book Study: Inspired: Slaying Giants\, Walking on Water and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans\n\n\nThis Lent\, we invite you to step into a thoughtful\, engaging\, and hope-filled journey through Scripture as we explore Rachel Held Evans’ beloved book Inspired. In this four‑week study\, we’ll look at how the stories of the Bible continue to shape\, challenge\, and encourage us today—especially as we walk through a season meant for reflection\, renewal\, and deeper faith. \n\n\nTogether\, we’ll consider how ancient narratives speak into our modern questions\, doubts\, joys\, fears\, and experiences. Evans’ writing offers both comfort and a gentle push toward curiosity\, helping us rediscover the Bible not as a book to be mastered\, but as a living\, breathing source of wisdom that invites us into conversation with God. \n\n\nOver our four weeks together\, we’ll… \n\nexplore fresh and transformative ways of engaging Scripture\,\nshare meaningful conversations in community\,\ndeepen our spiritual practices during Lent\, and\nsupport one another as we reflect on where God is moving in our lives.\n\n\n\nWhether you’ve read the Bible your whole life or you’re just beginning to approach it with new eyes\, this group offers a welcoming space for honesty\, exploration\, and growth. All are invited—bring your questions\, your stories\, and your openness to discovering something new. \n\n\nBooks will be available for purchase ($10)  from Pastor Rushan or through the Church Office. If you’d like us to reserve a copy for you\, just let us know! \n\n\nWe will meet in the Rewick Board Room on Tuesday evenings (February 24\, March 3\, 10 and 17) 6 PM – 7:30 PM and Thursday mornings (February 19 and 26\, March 12 and 19) 10:30 AM – 12 PM. \nCome when you can to either the morning OR evening session each week! \nCLICK TO SIGN UP!
