SUMMARY:Book Study - Reclaiming Our Faith: A Conversation for Curious Minds
DESCRIPTION:SEPTEMBER BOOK STUDY \nReclaiming Our Faith: A Conversation for Curious Minds \nHave you ever found yourself sitting in a pew\, hearing a traditional religious word like “salvation\,” “sin\,” or “faith\,” and feeling like it didn’t quite capture the depth of what you experience in your daily walk with God? Sometimes\, the words we grew up with can feel worn out\, misunderstood\, or even like a barrier to the spiritual life we actually live. \nThis September\, you are warmly invited to join us for a four-week book study as we explore Marcus J. Borg’s Speaking Christian: Why Christian Words Have Lost Their Meaning and Power and How They Can Be Restored. \nThis group is designed for those who appreciate honest conversation\, progressive perspectives\, and a desire to connect their lifelong faith with the reality of their life today. We won’t be looking for “right” answers or debating dogma. Instead\, we will gently peel back the layers of familiar language to rediscover the beauty and transformational power behind the words. \nWhy join us? \n\nDeepen Your Faith: Engage with ideas that bridge history\, scripture\, and personal experience.\nBuild Community: Share in meaningful\, safe\, and open-hearted dialogue with friends and neighbors.\nRefresh Your Perspective: Find new ways to speak and think about your spiritual journey in this season of life.\n\nDetails: \nDates/Times: 2 options each week! \n\nTuesday evenings (September 1\, 8\, 15\, 22) – 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM\nThursday mornings (September 3\, 10\, 17\, 24) 10:30 AM – 12 Noon\n\nLocation: Rewick Board Room \nWhether you have read every theology book on the shelf or are simply looking for a meaningful way to reconnect\, there is a place for you at this table. \nWe look forward to embarking on this journey of rediscovery with you. \nCopies of the book are available for purchase from Pastor Rushan or the Church office for $20. \nSIGN UP HERE

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Wayfinding and Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:Learning Tree: Wayfinding and Mindfulness\nAt its core\, mindfulness is a practice of non-judgmental awareness of the present moment. It is the simple but not easy practice of being fully present with our senses\, our thoughts\, and our feelings. Marion Lyman-Mersereau\, who taught mindfulness for decades and voyaged with the Polynesian Voyaging Society aboard the Hōkūleʻa\, will be sharing how these islands were originally found because of hoʻokele\, wayfinders\, who were astute observers of their natural environment. We will learn how to be navigators or wayfinders of our inner environment\, and also get a brief introduction to a mindful movement practice to incorporate in our lives.

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Hantavirus and Ebola – Emerging and re-emerging Viruses
DESCRIPTION:The World Health Organization has declared a health emergency following the latest outbreak of an Ebola strain for which we have no vaccine. It is one of the world’s deadliest viruses and now spreading rapidly in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. And on May 2\, 2026\, a cluster of passengers with severe respiratory illness aboard a cruise ship was reported to the World Health Organization. The virus was identified as a Hantavirus strain and had a case fatality rate among infected passengers of 23%. Global health workers are trying to keep these viruses contained. In a connected world like ours\, our neighbors’ health matters for us. CUC member and medical scientist Joe Elm will provide an update on Ebola and Hantavirus — learn what it is\, where it is present\, how to protect yourself\, and what we can do about the epidemic.

SUMMARY:Morning Lenten Book Study: Inspired
DESCRIPTION:Lenten Book Study: Inspired: Slaying Giants\, Walking on Water and Loving the Bible Again by Rachel Held Evans\n\n\nThis Lent\, we invite you to step into a thoughtful\, engaging\, and hope-filled journey through Scripture as we explore Rachel Held Evans’ beloved book Inspired. In this four‑week study\, we’ll look at how the stories of the Bible continue to shape\, challenge\, and encourage us today—especially as we walk through a season meant for reflection\, renewal\, and deeper faith. \n\n\nTogether\, we’ll consider how ancient narratives speak into our modern questions\, doubts\, joys\, fears\, and experiences. Evans’ writing offers both comfort and a gentle push toward curiosity\, helping us rediscover the Bible not as a book to be mastered\, but as a living\, breathing source of wisdom that invites us into conversation with God. \n\n\nOver our four weeks together\, we’ll… \n\nexplore fresh and transformative ways of engaging Scripture\,\nshare meaningful conversations in community\,\ndeepen our spiritual practices during Lent\, and\nsupport one another as we reflect on where God is moving in our lives.\n\n\n\nWhether you’ve read the Bible your whole life or you’re just beginning to approach it with new eyes\, this group offers a welcoming space for honesty\, exploration\, and growth. All are invited—bring your questions\, your stories\, and your openness to discovering something new. \n\n\nBooks will be available for purchase ($10)  from Pastor Rushan or through the Church Office.
If you’d like us to reserve a copy for you\, just let us know! \n\n\nWe will meet in the Rewick Board Room on Tuesday evenings (February 24\, March 3\, 10 and 17) 6 PM – 7:30 PM and Thursday mornings (February 19 and 26\, March 12 and 19) 10:30 AM – 12 PM. \nCome when you can to either the morning OR evening session each week! \nSIGN UP HERE!

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Wai Nau
DESCRIPTION:Please join our World Missions Ministry and wider community for this special presentation! \nRepresentatives from Wai Nau Aloha for Palestine Water Project will share their ongoing mutual aid project in Gaza\, detailing the current conditions of people internally displaced by the Zionist occupation. We will get to hear directly from people on the ground in Gaza and learn how we can offer support to Gazans through this grassroots effort led in part by O‘ahu residents. \nCUC World Missions Ministry has chosen Wai Nau as the recipient of their portion of the 2025 Christmas offering. \n\n\n\n\nThis project aligns with the Ministry’s mission to send money/goods/missionaries throughout the world to spread Christ’s Gospel; to educate; to create partnerships by acts of outreach nurtured with prayers\, concerns\, and encouragement. It also is a faithful response to recent resolutions from our wider church: “A Call to Education and Action Regarding the Crisis in Gaza” (affirmed by the 2024 ‘Aha Pae‘āina of the Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ) and “Declaration for an End to Genocide in Palestine” (affirmed by the 2025 General Synod of the United Church of Christ). \nThis is an opportunity to act on these resolutions\, live out our faith\, and learn how our offerings will be used to help our neighbors. Your mere attendance is a sign of solidarity in the willingness to bear witness to not only the suffering of our neighbors\, but also their resilience and resistance; and to support and encourage life-affirming work.

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Why Vaccines Are Vital
DESCRIPTION:Attend this informative presentation on the importance of vaccines as vaccine requirements are being changed. Know someone unsure of vaccines? Invite them to address their questions and concerns. \nShould I get vaccinated? Should I believe the protestations by Robert Kennedy Jr.\, Secretary of Health and Human Services? Should I believe the info I see online\, on social media? What’s the real science behind vaccines? Bring your concerns\, questions\, and fears and learn about how vaccines have changed the course of history of infectious diseases and saved hundreds of millions of lives. \nJoe Elm will share his 50 years of medical and scientific experience in The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Laboratory at Leahi Hospital; the Department of Tropical Medicine in the John A. Burns School of Medicine; and the Disease Investigation Branch at the Hawaii State Department of Health. \nThe following testimony is from a concerned mother and grandmother who shares her perspective on the importance of vaccines: \n\nSubacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis — You haven’t heard of this disease\, even though it occurs in developing countries\, because we haven’t had it in the U.S. for over half a century because we have vaccines! \nIt is fatal and has no cure. It has no treatment (except a few to temporarily relieve symptoms). The disease generally occurs in children and adolescents. \nHowever\, it is totally preventable with measles vaccines given in infancy. With recent changes to federal vaccine recommendations for entering school\, we can expect this disease to start appearing in the U.S. in about ten years (in unvaccinated children who are babies right now). \nThe infection usually begins in infancy but doesn’t show symptoms until about age 10. The brain is affected and the child deteriorates over the following few years\, generally dying in their teenage years. \nIf the mandatory measles vaccine is not reinstated now\, we can expect to see Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis appearing in the U.S. in about 2035. \nSuch a preventable tragedy of the most horrific kind.

SUMMARY:Advent Study: What do you fear?
DESCRIPTION:This Advent\, we invite you to a soul-stirring study led by Pastor Rushan. Drawing from the opening line of Luke’s Gospel—“In the time of Herod…”—this series explores the fearful and uncertain world into which Jesus was born\, one marked by oppression\, instability\, and economic disparity. It’s a world not unlike our own. Yet\, amid the darkness\, the angels proclaim a radical message: “Do not fear.” Through the stories of Mary\, Joseph\, the shepherds\, and the magi\, we’ll reflect on how faith doesn’t erase fear but moves through it with courage\, trust\, and hope. \nThis study invites us to name our fears\, examine how fear operates in our lives and communities\, and discover how God is breaking in with good news. Together\, we’ll explore how fear can be transformed into love and action\, and how insisting on hope—even trembling hope—can be a powerful spiritual practice. \nCome as you are—bring your questions\, your fears\, and your hope. Let’s journey together toward the light of Christ. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister online: bit.ly/advent2025cuc\n\nStudy materials will be available for pickup from the church office or directly from Pastor Rushan. \n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \n\n\n\n\nThere are two meeting options each week.
