SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Empathic Listening
DESCRIPTION:“When I Listen\, People Speak and Come Alive: Empathic Listening”\nWhen you ask someone how they are and they say\, “I’ve had a terrible day/week\,” or “Not so good\,” or even\, “Ok\, I guess\,” any response which indicates they are less than wonderful\, do you know what to do to be of most help to them? \nThe most helpful way to respond to others when they are experiencing distress is not by giving advice\, consoling\, questioning\, sympathizing\, (our common notions of “helping”)\, but rather through empathic listening—meeting them where they are! \nEmpathic listening\, which goes counter to what is commonly understood as help\, is a way of being with someone when they are experiencing upset whether it’s about something recent or long lived. The process of empathic listening was discovered 80 years ago by psychologist Carl Rogers and is learnable and doable by virtually everyone! \nIn this forum you’ll learn the process of empathic listening\, making you a better listener and therefore a better friend! \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nAllan Rohlfs has practiced listening as a psychotherapist and taught it widely for five decades\, including for 30 years to seminary students at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He wrote the book When I Listen People Speak and Come Alive: Empathic Listening\, which will soon be published. \n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \nLearning Tree is a forum in which we gather (typically on the second and fourth Sunday each month) to listen\, learn\, and engage with a topic that will help to grow our knowledge and faith. We may hear from our Ministers\, church members\, or speakers from the wider community. These are free learning opportunities open to all. If you have ideas for speakers/topics that might be of interest to our CUC ‘ohana\, you may contact Pastor Rushan (rushan-sinnaduray@centralunionchurch.org). \nThere will be NO Learning Tree on November 10.

SUMMARY:Election Day Drop-in Prayer Vigil
DESCRIPTION:Election Day Drop-in Prayer Vigil: Tuesday\, November 5\, 11AM – 1PM \nSo many of us are anxious\, worried and frightened in these days as we approach the General Election. That anxiety and worry is driven by so many things. In the midst of that anxiety\, prayer helps. So\, if you find yourself in need of prayer on Election Day\, 11/5\, Atherton Memorial Chapel will be open for you and for our wider community for quiet\, non-partisan prayer for our nation and the world\, for ourselves\, our loved ones and neighbors\, and even our enemies. Please drop in on Election Day at any time between 11 AM and 1 PM for quiet personal prayer. Pastor Rushan will lead a brief prayer service at 12 noon. All are welcome. \nIf you can’t make it in person\, our denomination the United Church of Christ is offering an online Prayer Service & Vigil at the same time. \n \nAll are invited to join UCC General Minister and President Karen Georgia Thompson and other UCC leaders for a nonpartisan Election Day Prayer Vigil and Convening on November 5 from 11 AM to 1 PM Hawai‘i time via Zoom. \n“As this historic campaign season concludes\, our prayer vigil will be an inclusive space to hold and share the complex feelings people carry on election day\,” said Michael Neuroth\, director of the UCC Office of Public Policy and Advocacy in Washington\, D.C. “We will gather as the Church to pray and remind one another that whatever the outcome of this election\, our mission remains unchanged — to build a just world for all.” \nRegister to receive the Zoom link and share your prayers for Election Day.

SUMMARY:Jazz Vespers
DESCRIPTION:Vespers is an ancient Christian tradition of Evening Prayer\, consisting of psalms\, hymns\, chants\, prayers\, and readings from the scriptures. Today\, many different spiritual communities have embraced vespers and will often include contemporary innovations such as congregational singing\, readings from a variety of texts\, poetry\, silent meditation\, or contemplation. \nWith Jazz Vespers\, an ethos of freedom and conscious choice provides a spiritual opportunity to hold improvisation as a metaphor for what it means to live in community. \nJoin us every first Sunday as we bring together amazing musicianship and holy inspiration for a service of prayer\, meditation\, silence\, and music!

SUMMARY:Learning Tree "Vision 2035 - Discerning Our Calling"
DESCRIPTION:Our stewardship theme this year has been “Imagine Together” and we have begun the exciting work of dreaming and thinking about the future of this vibrant faith community. \nAll are invited to gather in the Women’s Building for a special Learning Tree session facilitated by Pastor Rushan as we continue to “Imagine Together” the ways in which we can strengthen and grow our faith and our mission and ministry as we journey into the future. \nWe are sure that you have many dreams\, hopes and ideas for our church. Come to the Learning Tree and share them. Spend some time praying and discerning what you are willing to share of your time\, your talent and your treasure to make our collective dreams a reality. \nIn preparation for this Learning Tree\, you are invited to reflect on these questions: \n\nWhat is one dream you have for our church for the next five years?\nWhat do you imagine our worship services would look like? What could we do to make them more inclusive\, engaging and meaningful?\nWhat are your dreams for our church’s physical space and facilities?\nWhat do you imagine we could do to help deepen our spiritual growth as a congregation?\nWhat imaginative and creative ideas do you have to help us strengthen and build the community of Central Union Church?

SUMMARY:Book Study: "When Bad Things Happen to Good People"
DESCRIPTION:When Rabbi Harold Kushner’s three-year- old son was diagnosed with a degenerative disease that meant the boy would only live until his early teens\, he was faced with one of life’s most difficult questions: “Why\, God?” \nYears later\, Rabbi Kushner wrote this straightforward\, elegant contemplation of the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes. Often imitated but never superseded\, When Bad Things Happen to Good People offers clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow and challenge. \nJoin us for a 4-session book study of this classic as we reflect on our lives and on the suffering we see in the world around us. There will be two separate class times offered each week. You are welcome to move between sessions as it works for you. \n\nTuesday evenings (6:00 – 7:30 PM)\nThursday mornings (10:30 AM – 12:00 PM) \n\nSIGN UP HERE!\nYou don’t need to have a copy of the book\, but if you’re interested\, some hard copies will be available for purchase!

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Godly Play - Story of The Good Shepherd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special time of Godly Play as part of a series of Learning Tree opportunities! \nCome hear this story!\nSunday\, August 25 – The Good Shepherd\nGodly Play is a Montessori-based program designed to teach children sacred stories from scripture\, help them become familiar with the rhythms of liturgy and the liturgical calendar\, and to nurture the inherent spirituality of children. Godly Play is the faith formation program we use with our keiki here at Central Union Church\, but it can be used in a variety of settings with a range of ages! \nGodly Play begins with the core stories of the Bible\, such as creation and the exodus. It then builds on these central narratives by telling more stories from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament throughout the year. Since Godly Play follows its own storyline\, children may hear different parts of the Bible than what their parents hear during the service. However\, Godly Play does mirror the lessons heard by the whole congregation during feast days and special liturgical seasons such as Advent and Easter. \nDuring this Learning Tree session\, our Director of Children’s Ministries\, Cayanna Herrera\, will lead us in a time of Godly Play\, geared toward adults\, that will help you reflect and engage with your faith at a deeper and more personal level. Our worship service on this Sunday will be closely linked to the Godly Play story that will be shared in the Learning Tree. (Cayanna will also share the Godly Play story in our online worship this Sunday.) Please join us and enjoy the opportunity to grow through this story!

Since Godly Play follows its own storyline\, children may hear different parts of the Bible than what their parents hear during the service. However\, Godly Play does mirror the lessons heard by the whole congregation during feast days and special liturgical seasons such as Advent and Easter. \nDuring these Learning Tree sessions\, our Director of Children’s Ministries\, Cayanna Herrera\, will lead us in a time of Godly Play\, geared toward adults\, that will help you reflect and engage with your faith at a deeper and more personal level. Our worship services on these three Sundays will be closely linked to the Godly Play stories that will be shared in the Learning Tree. (Cayanna will also share the Godly Play story in our online worship each Sunday.) Please join us and enjoy the opportunity to grow through these stories!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a time of Bible study\, learning\, and discussion with our guest teacher\, Rev. Dr. Donald Schmidt\, who is a leading voice in progressive studies of our scriptures! Pastor Donald will invite us to read the texts anew and listen for what our Stillspeaking God is saying to us today. Each study will stand on its own and ALL are welcome\, so come as you are able!\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 4 – “Surprising Stories of New Testament Women”\n\n\nFebruary 18 – “What the Bible Says (and Doesn’t Say) about Easter”\n\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR GUEST TEACHER\n\n\n\nDonald Schmidt recently retired after some 40 years in active parish ministry\, so he could devote himself full-time to his first love: telling the stories of the Bible. In that process – which he tends to fill with humour and a sense of wit – Schmidt is eager to point out to it that often what we think – or have been told – the Bible says is not in fact always the real story. In a series of books (10 so far) written for progressive Christians\, Donald Schmidt invites us to lay aside traditional understandings and read the Bible with fresh eyes and an open heart. Schmidt has served churches in Canada and the US and also served for a time in staff with the Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ. He currently lives in Penticton\, British Columbia\, Canada.
