SUMMARY:BYU Men's Chorus - In Concert
DESCRIPTION:The BYU Men’s Chorus\, the largest collegiate male choir in the U.S.\, presents an evening of powerful and dynamic choral music. \n\n\n\n\nGet Ready for the BYU Men’s Chorus – In Concert!\nFor more than a century\, the Brigham Young University Men’s Chorus has stood as one of the most distinguished collegiate men’s choirs in the world. Founded in 1901\, the ensemble has grown into the largest collegiate male choir in the United States\, known for its commanding sound\, expressive range\, and deeply moving performances. \nComprising approximately 180 singers from across the university\, the BYU Men’s Chorus performs a wide-ranging repertoire that spans classical masterworks\, sacred hymns\, folk traditions\, and contemporary choral music. Their performances balance power and precision with warmth and musical storytelling\, creating concerts that resonate with both longtime choral enthusiasts and first-time listeners. \nThe ensemble is conducted by Dr. Brent Wells\, Associate Professor of Choral Conducting and Ensembles at Brigham Young University. Dr. Wells directs both the BYU Men’s Chorus and Concert Choir and is widely respected for his musical leadership\, scholarship\, and artistry. His academic work focuses on hymnody and folksong\, and his compositions and arrangements are performed by choirs internationally. As a conductor and performer\, he is known for shaping performances that are both technically refined and deeply expressive. \nUnder Dr. Wells’s direction\, the BYU Men’s Chorus continues its legacy of excellence while connecting audiences to the enduring power of the human voice. This Hawaii tour performance offers a rare opportunity to experience one of America’s most iconic men’s choral ensembles in an evening of stirring\, joyful\, and inspiring music. \n  \nBUY TICKETS\nPromo code: BYUFAM \n\n\n  \nCentral Union Church is just the venue\, not a sponsor of this event.

SUMMARY:2023 Messiah i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i
DESCRIPTION:Central Union’s ministry of music invites ALL to our annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday\, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary \nFor the second year\, continuing with our choral ministry’s mission in championing and celebrating our island’s source culture and the preservation of the Hawaiian language\, the performance will be an edition of Handel’s Messiah i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (in the Hawaiian language). \nAdmission is FREE! Donations are encouraged. \nFeaturing:\nNā Wai Chamber Choir\, an ensemble dedicated to the preservation\, propagation\, and innovation of Hawaiian choral music. \nThe Hawai‘i Nui Chorale\, a community ensemble dedicated to the performance of extended choral works.\nMembers of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra\nSarah Young\, Director of Choirs \n“I have spent my life at the intersection of classical music and Hawaiian culture. While these two phenomena may seem quite different\, I see them as indirect mirrors of each other. These two integral components of humanity are testaments to the resilience of our ancestors\, weavers of melodic contour\, proclamations of awe for the natural environment\, rituals that bring us together\, and important acts of beloved community. Handel’s Messiah is a work that exists at the forefront of the Classical vernacular for many reasons. This year\, we zoom into the Messiah as a profound act of honoring the language of community. Noting its history as a piece to be explored within the vernacular of the era\, Handel’s work is an example of how classical music can be accessible and relevant to our neighborhoods. For when we engage with music that brings the familiar and unfamiliar together\, we open ourselves to the infinite. This year\, for the [second time]\, we premiere a critical edition of the entire Christmas portion of the work i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i with orchestra\, soloists\, and choir. Join us.” —Dr. Jace Kaholokula Saplan\, Artistic Director \nVIEW PROGRAM
