SUMMARY:A Worship Service for the Weary
DESCRIPTION:A Worship Service for the Weary\nCentral Union Church will offer “A Worship Service for the Weary” on Thursday\, December 21st\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Atherton Memorial Chapel. This service is for all in the community who need the space to grieve\, to mourn\, or to just “be” – especially when the joy of the holiday season is elusive and out of reach. \nBlue Christmas 2022\, Central Union Church | All were invited to hang an ornament of the color representing either Grief\, Memories\, Courage\, Love. \nChurches around the world have adopted the practice of having a “Blue Christmas”’ or a “Longest Night” service during the Advent season. These services are designed to provide space for prayer\, reflection\, and remembrance amidst the twinkling lights and holiday hustle and bustle. This year\, instead of calling the service a “Blue Christmas” or “Longest Night Service\,” Central Union Church is calling it a “A Worship Service for the Weary\,” inspired by our Advent theme\, “How does a Weary World rejoice?” \nIn this season\, we are acknowledging the weariness that so many of us are feeling after many years of the COVID pandemic\, the conflict around the world\, the political situation in this country\, and the ongoing economic uncertainties that many of us face. This Advent we are exploring ways in which we find joy in the midst of that weariness. “A Worship Service for the Weary” will allow us to name that weariness and to hold it in prayer. Bring your grief. Bring your weariness. Bring your fatigue and allow yourself a quiet space to reflect and draw near to God. We hope that these words and this order of worship can be a gift to individuals and to our community alike\, providing a space of calm\, quiet\, and healing. We hope this service will allow many to find peace in their journey. \nCentral Union Church is a member of the United Church of Christ ‘Ohana. We are located at 1660 S. Beretania Street\, on the corner of Beretania and Punahou Streets\, next to the Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children. \n# # # \nYou may also worship ONLINE!\n \nView our schedule of events for Christmas 2023:

SUMMARY:2023 Messiah i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i
DESCRIPTION:Central Union’s ministry of music invites ALL to our annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday\, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary \nFor the second year\, continuing with our choral ministry’s mission in championing and celebrating our island’s source culture and the preservation of the Hawaiian language\, the performance will be an edition of Handel’s Messiah i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (in the Hawaiian language). \nAdmission is FREE! Donations are encouraged. \nFeaturing:\nNā Wai Chamber Choir\, an ensemble dedicated to the preservation\, propagation\, and innovation of Hawaiian choral music. \nThe Hawai‘i Nui Chorale\, a community ensemble dedicated to the performance of extended choral works.\nMembers of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra\nSarah Young\, Director of Choirs \n“I have spent my life at the intersection of classical music and Hawaiian culture. While these two phenomena may seem quite different\, I see them as indirect mirrors of each other. These two integral components of humanity are testaments to the resilience of our ancestors\, weavers of melodic contour\, proclamations of awe for the natural environment\, rituals that bring us together\, and important acts of beloved community. Handel’s Messiah is a work that exists at the forefront of the Classical vernacular for many reasons. This year\, we zoom into the Messiah as a profound act of honoring the language of community. Noting its history as a piece to be explored within the vernacular of the era\, Handel’s work is an example of how classical music can be accessible and relevant to our neighborhoods. For when we engage with music that brings the familiar and unfamiliar together\, we open ourselves to the infinite. This year\, for the [second time]\, we premiere a critical edition of the entire Christmas portion of the work i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i with orchestra\, soloists\, and choir. Join us.” —Dr. Jace Kaholokula Saplan\, Artistic Director \nVIEW PROGRAM

SUMMARY:2023 Budget Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, August 27\, 2023\, after one combined in-person worship service at 10 AM in the Sanctuary (and online)\, we will gather for our Annual Budget Meeting for the dual purpose of approving our Budget for the new fiscal year (August 1\, 2023 to July 31\, 2024) and voting upon a proposed amendment to our Bylaws that will combine future Annual Budget Meetings with future Annual Membership Meetings into a single annual meeting. \nNote: Information to join by Zoom (for those members who cannot attend in person) will be emailed to church members by August 25\, 5 PM. \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nBUDGET OVERVIEW\nBUDGET DETAIL\nABOUT THE BUDGET\nIn its July 29th meeting\, the Council approved the proposed budget (for the fiscal year from August 1\, 2023\, through July 31\, 2024) prepared by CUC Treasurer\, David Yee\, assisted by Comptroller\, Angie Barboza\, for presentation to the Congregation for consideration and approval at this upcoming Annual Budget Meeting. \nAs a reminder\, the prior budget approved by the Congregation earlier this year (on January 29\, 2023)\, was for the 7-month “stub” fiscal year that began on January 1\, 2023 and ended on July 31\, 2023. This was due to the recent alignment of our Church fiscal year with the Preschool fiscal year. As David Yee explained previously\, with the start of the new fiscal year on August 1\, 2023\, we will be back to a full 12-month fiscal year. \n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nPROPOSED AMENDMENT TO BYLAWS\n\nABOUT THE BYLAWS AMENDMENT\nCurrently\, our Bylaws require (1) before the end of August\, an Annual Budget Meeting for CUC Members to review and approve the budget for the fiscal year\, and (2) before the end of May\, an Annual Membership Meeting for CUC Members to elect Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. Given the recent alignment of the Annual Budget Meeting with CUC’s fiscal year\, the Council concluded it would be beneficial to combine the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting to be held on or before the last day of September of each year for the purposes of considering and approving the budget for the fiscal year\, electing Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership\, and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. \nThe Council believes this change\, which will allow for all routine\, annual business of CUC to be addressed in a single meeting\, is a more comprehensive and efficient way for CUC Members to exercise their reserved rights under our Bylaws. Consequently\, the Council will be presenting a proposed Bylaws Amendment to CUC Members for consideration and approval at the Annual Budget Meeting that combines the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting as aforesaid.

SUMMARY:Women’s League Scholarship Awardee Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please come – One and ALL\, to meet and greet the newest recipients of the Kenneth and Doris Rewick Educational Fund and the Ruth C. Scudder Scholarship Fund. \nThe Women’s League would be THRILLED if ALL members of the congregation would come to meet these awardees.  It would be a blessing to have these students come to know the fellowship and ‘ohana of Central Union Church that has made their grants and scholarships possible.  Please save the date\, drop in after/before worship to say hello\, shake some hands\, and have some refreshments.  We only ask that you bring your WELCOMING SMILE! \nABOUT\nThe Women’s League of Central Union Church established an educational aid grant in 1968 and later renamed the fund to honor Senior Minister Dr. Kenneth Rewick and former Central Union Church Preschool Director Mrs. Doris Rewick. \nThe Rewick Educational Fund is awarded to students from Hawai‘i who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in any accredited school for undergraduate or graduate college training or for other specialized training beyond high school.  The students may be full time\, part time\, or on-line students. \nThe Ruth C. Scudder Scholarship Fund was established by the Women’s Society of Central Union Church in 1915 in memory of Mrs. Ruth C. Scudder\, who was the wife of former CUC Pastor Dr. Doremus Scudder.  This scholarship is awarded to a woman of Christian affiliation from Hawai‘i\, with preference to the United Church of Christ\, and who is a student in the University of Hawai‘i system\, with preference being given to upperclassmen. \nBoth of these grants are awarded to students based on character\, scholarship\, evidence of financial need\, and community service. \nVIEW A LIST OF THE 2023-2024 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES
