SUMMARY:Budget Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Come to ask your questions about the Budget (FYE 7/31/24) and the proposed Amendment to the Bylaws which will be voted on by members at the August 27th Annual Budget Meeting. \nWe encourage you to review the following information and documents prior to the info session and budget meeting. \nABOUT THE BUDGET\nIn its July 29th meeting\, the Council approved the proposed budget (for the fiscal year from August 1\, 2023\, through July 31\, 2024) prepared by CUC Treasurer\, David Yee\, assisted by Comptroller\, Angie Barboza\, for presentation to the Congregation for consideration and approval at this upcoming Annual Budget Meeting. \nAs a reminder\, the prior budget approved by the Congregation earlier this year (on January 29\, 2023)\, was for the 7-month “stub” fiscal year that began on January 1\, 2023 and ended on July 31\, 2023. This was due to the recent alignment of our Church fiscal year with the Preschool fiscal year. As David Yee explained previously\, with the start of the new fiscal year on August 1\, 2023\, we will be back to a full 12-month fiscal year. \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nBUDGET OVERVIEW\nBUDGET DETAIL\n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \nABOUT THE BYLAWS AMENDMENT\nCurrently\, our Bylaws require (1) before the end of August\, an Annual Budget Meeting for CUC Members to review and approve the budget for the fiscal year\, and (2) before the end of May\, an Annual Membership Meeting for CUC Members to elect Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. Given the recent alignment of the Annual Budget Meeting with CUC’s fiscal year\, the Council concluded it would be beneficial to combine the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting to be held on or before the last day of September of each year for the purposes of considering and approving the budget for the fiscal year\, electing Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership\, and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. \nThe Council believes this change\, which will allow for all routine\, annual business of CUC to be addressed in a single meeting\, is a more comprehensive and efficient way for CUC Members to exercise their reserved rights under our Bylaws. Consequently\, the Council will be presenting a proposed Bylaws Amendment to CUC Members for consideration and approval at the Annual Budget Meeting that combines the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting as aforesaid. \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nPROPOSED AMENDMENT TO BYLAWS

SUMMARY:2023 Messiah i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i
DESCRIPTION:Central Union’s ministry of music invites ALL to our annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday\, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary \nFor the second year\, continuing with our choral ministry’s mission in championing and celebrating our island’s source culture and the preservation of the Hawaiian language\, the performance will be an edition of Handel’s Messiah i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i (in the Hawaiian language). \nAdmission is FREE! Donations are encouraged. \nFeaturing:\nNā Wai Chamber Choir\, an ensemble dedicated to the preservation\, propagation\, and innovation of Hawaiian choral music. \nThe Hawai‘i Nui Chorale\, a community ensemble dedicated to the performance of extended choral works.\nMembers of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra\nSarah Young\, Director of Choirs \n“I have spent my life at the intersection of classical music and Hawaiian culture. While these two phenomena may seem quite different\, I see them as indirect mirrors of each other. These two integral components of humanity are testaments to the resilience of our ancestors\, weavers of melodic contour\, proclamations of awe for the natural environment\, rituals that bring us together\, and important acts of beloved community. Handel’s Messiah is a work that exists at the forefront of the Classical vernacular for many reasons. This year\, we zoom into the Messiah as a profound act of honoring the language of community. Noting its history as a piece to be explored within the vernacular of the era\, Handel’s work is an example of how classical music can be accessible and relevant to our neighborhoods. For when we engage with music that brings the familiar and unfamiliar together\, we open ourselves to the infinite. This year\, for the [second time]\, we premiere a critical edition of the entire Christmas portion of the work i ka ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i with orchestra\, soloists\, and choir. Join us.” —Dr. Jace Kaholokula Saplan\, Artistic Director \nVIEW PROGRAM

SUMMARY:A Worship Service for the Weary
DESCRIPTION:A Worship Service for the Weary\nCentral Union Church will offer “A Worship Service for the Weary” on Thursday\, December 21st\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Atherton Memorial Chapel. This service is for all in the community who need the space to grieve\, to mourn\, or to just “be” – especially when the joy of the holiday season is elusive and out of reach. \nBlue Christmas 2022\, Central Union Church | All were invited to hang an ornament of the color representing either Grief\, Memories\, Courage\, Love. \nChurches around the world have adopted the practice of having a “Blue Christmas”’ or a “Longest Night” service during the Advent season. These services are designed to provide space for prayer\, reflection\, and remembrance amidst the twinkling lights and holiday hustle and bustle. This year\, instead of calling the service a “Blue Christmas” or “Longest Night Service\,” Central Union Church is calling it a “A Worship Service for the Weary\,” inspired by our Advent theme\, “How does a Weary World rejoice?” \nIn this season\, we are acknowledging the weariness that so many of us are feeling after many years of the COVID pandemic\, the conflict around the world\, the political situation in this country\, and the ongoing economic uncertainties that many of us face. This Advent we are exploring ways in which we find joy in the midst of that weariness. “A Worship Service for the Weary” will allow us to name that weariness and to hold it in prayer. Bring your grief. Bring your weariness. Bring your fatigue and allow yourself a quiet space to reflect and draw near to God. We hope that these words and this order of worship can be a gift to individuals and to our community alike\, providing a space of calm\, quiet\, and healing. We hope this service will allow many to find peace in their journey. \nCentral Union Church is a member of the United Church of Christ ‘Ohana. We are located at 1660 S. Beretania Street\, on the corner of Beretania and Punahou Streets\, next to the Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children. \n# # # \nYou may also worship ONLINE!\n \nView our schedule of events for Christmas 2023:

SUMMARY:Christmas Eve online worship
DESCRIPTION:Worship with us this Christmas (or whenever)!\n \nORDER OF WORSHIP: \nPrelude – Constance Uejio\, Harp \nWelcome – Rev. Rushan Sinnaduray \nOpening Prayer – Rev. Mary Herbig \nCarol: “O Come\, O Come Emmanuel” \nReading of Luke 2:1-5 – Elston Family\nIn those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea\, to the city of David called Bethlehem\, because he was descended from the house and family of David. Joseph went to be registered with Mary\, to whom he was engaged and who was expecting a child. \nCarol: “O Little Town of Bethlehem” \nReading of Luke 2:6-7 – Elston Family\nWhile Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem\, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth\, and laid him in a manger\, because there was no place for them in the inn. \nCarol: “What Child Is This?” \nReading of Luke 2:8-15 – Elston Family\nIn that region there were shepherds living in the fields\, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them\, and the glory of the Lord shone around them\, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them\, ‘Do not be afraid; for behold! — I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior\, who is the Messiah\, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.’\nSuddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host\, praising God and saying\, ‘Glory to God in the highest heaven\, and on earth peace among those whom he favors!’ When the angels had left them and gone into heaven\, the shepherds said to one another\, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened\, which the Lord has told us about.” \nCarol: “Hark The Herald Angels Sing / King Of Heaven” \nChristmas Meditation: “Let Christmas Surprise You” – Rev. Rushan Sinnaduray \nCarol: “O Come\, All Ye Faithful” \nReading of Luke 2:16-19 – Elston Family\nThe shepherds went with haste and found Mary and Joseph\, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this\, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. \nCarol: “O Holy Night” \nLighting of Christ Candle (Reading of John 1:1-2\, 14a\, 4-5) \nCarol: “Light of the World” \nInvitation to Offering – Evelyn Hao of Community Ministry \nBenediction – Rev. Rushan Sinnaduray \nCarol: “Joy to the World” \n~ ~ ~ \nMerry Christmas!

SUMMARY:Bible Study: "Surprising Stories of New Testament Women”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a time of Bible study\, learning\, and discussion with our guest teacher\, Rev. Dr. Donald Schmidt\, who is a leading voice in progressive studies of our scriptures! Pastor Donald will invite us to read the texts anew and listen for what our Stillspeaking God is saying to us today. Each study will stand on its own and ALL are welcome\, so come as you are able!\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 4 – “Surprising Stories of New Testament Women”\n\n\nFebruary 18 – “What the Bible Says (and Doesn’t Say) about Easter”\n\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR GUEST TEACHER\n\n\n\nDonald Schmidt recently retired after some 40 years in active parish ministry\, so he could devote himself full-time to his first love: telling the stories of the Bible. In that process – which he tends to fill with humour and a sense of wit – Schmidt is eager to point out to it that often what we think – or have been told – the Bible says is not in fact always the real story. In a series of books (10 so far) written for progressive Christians\, Donald Schmidt invites us to lay aside traditional understandings and read the Bible with fresh eyes and an open heart. Schmidt has served churches in Canada and the US and also served for a time in staff with the Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ. He currently lives in Penticton\, British Columbia\, Canada.

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday Service
DESCRIPTION:Ash Wednesday marks the onset of Lent\, the 40-day period of reflection\, repentance\, and preparation leading up to the celebration of Easter and resurrection. \nOn Ash Wednesday\, also known as the ‘Day of Ashes’\, the church invites all to have their foreheads marked with ashes in the shape of a cross as a sign of humility and mortality; and as a sign of sorrow and remorse for the pain we’ve experienced and the harm we’ve caused. We remember that we are dust\, and to dust we will return (Genesis 3:19). \nIn our busy culture\, the Lenten season is a gift. It offers us a time to slow down\, breathe deep\, and focus on our spiritual practices – those habits that draw us nearer to God and help us to sense the Spirit’s movement in our lives. \nJoin us for a simple evening service including music\, meditation\, and imposition of ashes\, as we begin the season of Lent.

SUMMARY:Lenten Study: Gifts of the Dark Wood (morning session)
DESCRIPTION:Have you failed recently? Do you feel lost\, or like the road ahead is unclear? Are you ever tempted? Do you find any part of your life exhausting? Do you feel out of place among your peers\, or society at large? \nBased on themes explored in Eric Elnes’ book Gifts of the Dark Wood\, our Lenten Study group will explore the proposition that our best help on life’s journey often comes from the most unlikely and misunderstood of places: a place known famously\, or infamously\, as the Dark Wood.\n  \nLed by Pastor Rushan Sinnaduray\n\nFive Thursdays during Lent (Come when you can!)\nFebruary 15\, 22; March 7\, 14\, 21\n\n11 AM – 12:30 PM\n\nRewick Board Room\n  \n\nNote: You do NOT need to have read the book\, but if you would like a copy of the book\, it is available as both an e-book or physical book.\nPlease sign up here: https://bit.ly/cuc2024lent
