SUMMARY:Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Join us each week for mindfulness meditation led by our very own Marion Lyman-Mersereau! \nMindfulness is non-judgmental awareness of the present moment or simply\, noticing what’s happening right now. We are often caught up in thinking; remembering the past or anticipating the future or conjuring up a fantasy world. Although thinking is an important part of being human we often miss the fullness of an experience by being stuck in our thinking\, often judgmental and reactive minds. Mindfulness can help us become better able to respond rather than react to life’s many situations as we learn to calm our busy minds. For more benefits of the practice see: What are the benefits of mindfulness?\n \nJOIN ON ZOOM\n\n“Mindfulness isnʻt difficult\, we just need to remember to do it.” – Sharon Salzberg \nOne morning\, when I was walking the dogs at Manoa Park\, I saw some litter near the stream. I handed my coffee cup to my husband saying\, “I can’t stand this.” When I returned with the litter and asked for my coffee\, I found he had drunk it. He replied to my complaints\, “I thought you said you couldn’t stand it.” I continued my haranguing\, “I was talking about the litter! You don’t even like coffee with cream!” and on and on.  All of a sudden I saw a brilliant rainbow which shifted me\, in that moment of presence\, from reacting with anger to responding with laughter at the miscommunication that had occurred. \nSome years ago I learned about mindfulness practice which was defined as non-judgmental awareness of the present moment or simply\, noticing what’s happening right now. At any given moment\, I discovered\, I can be present or pay attention to my senses including my emotions. In that moment of noticing I am mindful. \nI find I am often caught up in thinking\, remembering the past or anticipating the future or I conjure up a fantasy world. I am rarely present\, fully witnessing each moment with my senses or feelings. In the moment that I noticed the rainbow\, fully present with its ethereal beauty\, I became calmer and saner – not caught up in my petty complaints. \nAlthough thinking is an important part of being human I find I miss the fullness of an experience by being stuck in my head. On a recent hike with a friend\, after we’d caught up with our lives\, we walked without talking for quite awhile. Our awareness was drawn to the surrounding beauty\, birdsong\, cool mauka air\, and our breath. \nMindful moments like these help calm a busy mind and strengthen my ability to create\, to appreciate\, and more fully embrace life. \n—”Moment to Moment Awareness” by Marion Lyman-Mersereau (featured in the Midweek)

SUMMARY:Good Friday Service
DESCRIPTION:On Good Friday\, we remember the crucifixion and death of Jesus\, recalling the final moments of Jesus’ life. In this simple evening service with song and scripture\, a cross will move through the sanctuary as we are invited to consider our own faith journey and the places we have fractures in our communion with God the Creator\, Son\, and Holy Spirit. \nFor those who can’t attend in person\, we invite you into a similar time of meditation and prayer through the online service below. \nIt is only by acknowledging and moving through the brokenness\, struggle\, separation confronting each of us in this Holy Week—and in our own lives and world—that we experience the power of Easter and resurrection. \n

SUMMARY:Lenten Series: Taste and See
DESCRIPTION:Taste and See: Cultivating Attentiveness with Our Senses\nLent is a season of reflection\, repentance\, and preparation as we prepare for the new life celebrated on Easter Sunday. In our busy culture\, the Lenten season is a gift. It offers us a time to slow down\, breathe deep\, and focus on our spiritual practices – those habits that draw us nearer to God and help us to sense the Spirit’s movement in our lives. After three years of pandemic in our world and much transition in our church\, we can all benefit from intentional time to “practice the presence of God\,” to borrow a phrase from Brother Lawrence. \nJoin us during the midweek from 6:30-8:00 PM in the Women’s Building! We will share a simple meal with discussion led by Pastor Mary and Pastor Dave\, and we’ll learn tangible exercises to help us cultivate attentiveness to God. All are welcome! Each week’s gathering stands alone\, so come whenever you are able. \nFifth Wednesday\nTHEME: Present to God through Sight\, Vision\nTEXT: Psalm 130\, Psalm 119:18 “Open my eyes\, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”

SUMMARY:Hawai‘i Handbell Farewell Concert
DESCRIPTION:UH Community Colleges and Hakuoh University present:\nHawai‘i Handbell Farewell Concert\nCelebrating its 35th anniversary\, the internationally-recognized Hakuoh University Handbell Choir will be on O‘ahu from March 8-12\, 2023\, for its 29th Goodwill Tour of Hawai‘i\, offering free public concerts. Led by acclaimed Director Hirotaka Arai\, who founded the choir in 1988\, the 15 student handbell ringers will perform its “farewell” free public concert at Central Union Church on Thursday\, March 9\, at 7 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Enjoy their beautiful music as they perform a range of songs from classical to contemporary Broadway tunes to Hawai‘i Aloha. \nAdmission is FREE! \nAs Director Arai plans to retire from his long and illustrious career\, 2023 will be the final handbell choir concert in Hawai‘i.  The annual Handbell Choir Concert\, co-sponsored by Hakuoh University and the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges [UHCC]\, is one of the many cooperative activities undertaken by these institutions.  These free concerts for the community and children have been held annually since 1990.  The concerts were paused for three years from 2020-2022 due to COVID-19.  UHCC began coordinating the concerts in 2007 to the present at Windward Community College’s Paliku Theatre and at Leeward Community College’s Leeward Theatre.  During this period\, concerts were also held at Central Union Church as a community service. \nView flyer
