SUMMARY:Book Study "When Bad Things Happen to Good People
DESCRIPTION:When Rabbi Harold Kushner’s three-year- old son was diagnosed with a degenerative disease that meant the boy would only live until his early teens\, he was faced with one of life’s most difficult questions: “Why\, God?” \nYears later\, Rabbi Kushner wrote this straightforward\, elegant contemplation of the doubts and fears that arise when tragedy strikes. In this book\, Kushner shares his wisdom as a rabbi\, a parent\, a reader\, and a human being. Often imitated but never superseded\, When Bad Things Happen to Good People offers clear thinking and consolation in times of sorrow and challenge. \nJoin us for a 4-session book study of this classic as we reflect on our lives and on the suffering we see in the world around us. There will be two separate class times offered each week. You are welcome to move between sessions as it works for you. \n\nTuesday evenings (6:00 – 7:30 PM)\nThursday mornings (10:30 AM – 12:00 PM) \n\nSIGN UP HERE!\nYou don’t need to have a copy of the book\, but if you’re interested\, some hard copies will be available for purchase!

SUMMARY:Aloha Sunday with the Royal Court
DESCRIPTION:Central Union Church has a long tradition of hosting the Royal Court\, representatives of Hawai‘i’s past\, at the 9 AM Sunday service\, during Aloha Week in Hawai‘i. For the community at large (and the Hawaiian community in particular)\, it is a statement that Central Union is highly supportive of the people and culture of Hawai‘i and is a reminder and acknowledgement of the important role of the culture in shaping the heritage of these islands. \nThe theme for this year’s Aloha Festivals is ʻAʻa I Ka Hula\, which can be interpreted as “Dare to Dance.” The theme is a phrase taken from the saying\, “ʻAʻa i ka hula\, waiho ka hilahila ma ka hale” – “When one wants to dance the hula\, bashfulness should be left at home.” ʻAʻa also means to be brave\, to dare\, and to challenge. Hula was viewed as a pagan ritual by missionaries\, driven underground due to prohibition\, and nearly lost as a vital cultural artform\, these meanings are a striking reminder. They remind us of the fragility of our artforms\, and that vigilance and care are required to ensure their inheritance throughout the generations. \nThis year\, we celebrate the brave\, the daring\, the challenge seekers. In 2024\, let us celebrate our kumu hula\, our hula teachers and hula masters. By their tutelage our hands and feet tell the beautiful stories of this land and its people. \nWe will celebrate Aloha Sunday in all of our worship services this day (7 AM\, 9 AM\, 11 AM\, online) but the Royal Court will only be present at the 9 AM service.

SUMMARY:Service of Healing & Prayer
DESCRIPTION:Join us on the third Sunday of the month for this special\, intimate\, and contemplative service in the Iona tradition. Too often in our living we struggle with woundedness – whether of the body\, of the mind\, or of the spirit. \nCome and discover a place of healing for your soul rooted in the traditions of the Scottish island of Iona where Celtic Christianity flourishes. The service will include music from the Taizé community\, prayer\, silence\, and the ritual of the laying on of hands for those who would like. All are welcome. \nNote: We incorrectly advertised this service in the October 16th HCUCC Coconut Wireless as being on November 3\, which is our Jazz Vespers service.

Spend some time praying and discerning what you are willing to share of your time\, your talent and your treasure to make our collective dreams a reality. \nIn preparation for this Learning Tree\, you are invited to reflect on these questions: \n\nWhat is one dream you have for our church for the next five years?\nWhat do you imagine our worship services would look like? What could we do to make them more inclusive\, engaging and meaningful?\nWhat are your dreams for our church’s physical space and facilities?\nWhat do you imagine we could do to help deepen our spiritual growth as a congregation?\nWhat imaginative and creative ideas do you have to help us strengthen and build the community of Central Union Church?

SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Empathic Listening
DESCRIPTION:“When I Listen\, People Speak and Come Alive: Empathic Listening”\nWhen you ask someone how they are and they say\, “I’ve had a terrible day/week\,” or “Not so good\,” or even\, “Ok\, I guess\,” any response which indicates they are less than wonderful\, do you know what to do to be of most help to them? \nThe most helpful way to respond to others when they are experiencing distress is not by giving advice\, consoling\, questioning\, sympathizing\, (our common notions of “helping”)\, but rather through empathic listening—meeting them where they are! \nEmpathic listening\, which goes counter to what is commonly understood as help\, is a way of being with someone when they are experiencing upset whether it’s about something recent or long lived. The process of empathic listening was discovered 80 years ago by psychologist Carl Rogers and is learnable and doable by virtually everyone! \nIn this forum you’ll learn the process of empathic listening\, making you a better listener and therefore a better friend! \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nAllan Rohlfs has practiced listening as a psychotherapist and taught it widely for five decades\, including for 30 years to seminary students at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. He wrote the book When I Listen People Speak and Come Alive: Empathic Listening\, which will soon be published. \n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \nLearning Tree is a forum in which we gather (typically on the second and fourth Sunday each month) to listen\, learn\, and engage with a topic that will help to grow our knowledge and faith. We may hear from our Ministers\, church members\, or speakers from the wider community. These are free learning opportunities open to all. If you have ideas for speakers/topics that might be of interest to our CUC ‘ohana\, you may contact Pastor Rushan (rushan-sinnaduray@centralunionchurch.org). \nThere will be NO Learning Tree on November 10.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Gaza in International Context
DESCRIPTION:Educating ourselves is one way we are called to faithfully respond to the Resolution of Witness affirmed at the HCUCC ‘Aha Pae‘āina in 2024\, ‘A Call to Education and Action Regarding the Crisis in Gaza.’ \nThis presentation will situate the Israeli genocide\, funded by the U.S.\, in Gaza that started in October 2023 in relation to the history of Zionism starting in the late 1800s\, and in the context of Israel’s practices of settler colonialism\, apartheid\, ethnic cleansing\, and military occupation\, ongoing since its establishment in 1948. Presenters will discuss Gaza in the context of global politics to shed light on U.S. interests not only in West Asia\, but also in terms of the rivalry between the U.S. on one hand and China and Russia on the other.  The presentation will conclude with attention both to Hawai‘i and Palestine as interconnected sites of settler colonialism and occupation\, and also to solidarities between Kānaka Maoli and Palestinians who are engaged in liberation struggles. \n\nABOUT THE PRESENTERS: \nCynthia Franklin is a professor of English at University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. She has visited Palestine several times since 2013\, including to work on a special issue of Biography journal\, coedited with Ibrahim Aoude and Morgan Cooper\, on “Life in Occupied Palestine” (2014)\, and to teach at Al-Quds University in 2018. Her most recent book is Narrating Humanity: Life Writing and Movement Politics from Palestine to Mauna Kea (2023). She founded the group now known as Students and Faculty for Justice in Palestine in 2014\, and that same year co-founded the Hawai’i chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace. \nIbrahim G. Aoudé is Professor Emeritus of Ethnic Studies at the University of Hawai‘i-Mānoa and the Editor of Arab Studies Quarterly\, an international journal about the Arabs and their culture. His research and publications are in the areas of global geo-politics\, the political economy of Hawai‘i\, and the politics of West Asia and North Africa. \nRSVP encouraged: bit.ly/gazacontext

SUMMARY:Day of Prayer and Public Witness
DESCRIPTION:December 10 (Human Rights Day)\, has been chosen as the Conference-wide Day of Prayer and Public Witness. On this day\, all of our churches and members are encouraged to join with one voice to call for a ceasefire in Gaza where well over 40\,000 people have been killed in the past year. \nThis call is in response to a resolution that Central Union sponsored\, “A Call to Education and Action Regarding the Crisis in Gaza“\, which was affirmed at the annual Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ ‘Aha Pae‘āina in June 2024. \nA small team of CUC members – including representatives from Community Ministry\, World Mission Ministry\, and the Young(ish) Adult Ministry – has prayerfully organized two ways that Central Union will participate: \nA sign-waving campaign from 3:45-6:00 PM on the Great Lawn \n\nBring a sign with messages of justice\, peace\, and specific calls for a ceasefire. (“This Church calls for a ceasefire in Gaza\,” “Ceasefire now!”\, “All I want for Christmas is a ceasefire\,” “Honk if you support a ceasefire\,” “Give peace a chance”\, etc.) We will have a few extra signs available!\n\n\nWe will wave our signs along the street\, starting and ending our time with prayer. Come as you’re able! Chairs will be available for those who need to sit.\n\nIf you can’t make it\, you can still show your support through social media. Learn more HERE.
