SUMMARY:2023 Budget Meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, August 27\, 2023\, after one combined in-person worship service at 10 AM in the Sanctuary (and online)\, we will gather for our Annual Budget Meeting for the dual purpose of approving our Budget for the new fiscal year (August 1\, 2023 to July 31\, 2024) and voting upon a proposed amendment to our Bylaws that will combine future Annual Budget Meetings with future Annual Membership Meetings into a single annual meeting. \nNote: Information to join by Zoom (for those members who cannot attend in person) will be emailed to church members by August 25\, 5 PM. \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nBUDGET OVERVIEW\nBUDGET DETAIL\nABOUT THE BUDGET\nIn its July 29th meeting\, the Council approved the proposed budget (for the fiscal year from August 1\, 2023\, through July 31\, 2024) prepared by CUC Treasurer\, David Yee\, assisted by Comptroller\, Angie Barboza\, for presentation to the Congregation for consideration and approval at this upcoming Annual Budget Meeting. \nAs a reminder\, the prior budget approved by the Congregation earlier this year (on January 29\, 2023)\, was for the 7-month “stub” fiscal year that began on January 1\, 2023 and ended on July 31\, 2023. This was due to the recent alignment of our Church fiscal year with the Preschool fiscal year. As David Yee explained previously\, with the start of the new fiscal year on August 1\, 2023\, we will be back to a full 12-month fiscal year. \n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nPROPOSED AMENDMENT TO BYLAWS\n\nABOUT THE BYLAWS AMENDMENT\nCurrently\, our Bylaws require (1) before the end of August\, an Annual Budget Meeting for CUC Members to review and approve the budget for the fiscal year\, and (2) before the end of May\, an Annual Membership Meeting for CUC Members to elect Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. Given the recent alignment of the Annual Budget Meeting with CUC’s fiscal year\, the Council concluded it would be beneficial to combine the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting to be held on or before the last day of September of each year for the purposes of considering and approving the budget for the fiscal year\, electing Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership\, and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. \nThe Council believes this change\, which will allow for all routine\, annual business of CUC to be addressed in a single meeting\, is a more comprehensive and efficient way for CUC Members to exercise their reserved rights under our Bylaws. Consequently\, the Council will be presenting a proposed Bylaws Amendment to CUC Members for consideration and approval at the Annual Budget Meeting that combines the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting as aforesaid.

This concert will explore the works of Lorenzo Lyons and the mele of Ka Moku o Keawe. Lorenzo Lyons was an early missionary to Waimea\, Hawaiʻi who sought an understanding of the Hawaiian culture through his relationship with the Kānaka Maoli. SUMMARY:Women’s League Scholarship Awardee Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please come – One and ALL\, to meet and greet the newest recipients of the Kenneth and Doris Rewick Educational Fund and the Ruth C. Scudder Scholarship Fund. \nThe Women’s League would be THRILLED if ALL members of the congregation would come to meet these awardees.  It would be a blessing to have these students come to know the fellowship and ‘ohana of Central Union Church that has made their grants and scholarships possible.  Please save the date\, drop in after/before worship to say hello\, shake some hands\, and have some refreshments.  We only ask that you bring your WELCOMING SMILE! \nABOUT\nThe Women’s League of Central Union Church established an educational aid grant in 1968 and later renamed the fund to honor Senior Minister Dr. Kenneth Rewick and former Central Union Church Preschool Director Mrs. Doris Rewick. \nThe Rewick Educational Fund is awarded to students from Hawai‘i who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in any accredited school for undergraduate or graduate college training or for other specialized training beyond high school.  The students may be full time\, part time\, or on-line students. \nThe Ruth C. Scudder Scholarship Fund was established by the Women’s Society of Central Union Church in 1915 in memory of Mrs. Ruth C. Scudder\, who was the wife of former CUC Pastor Dr. Doremus Scudder.  This scholarship is awarded to a woman of Christian affiliation from Hawai‘i\, with preference to the United Church of Christ\, and who is a student in the University of Hawai‘i system\, with preference being given to upperclassmen. \nBoth of these grants are awarded to students based on character\, scholarship\, evidence of financial need\, and community service. \nVIEW A LIST OF THE 2023-2024 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES

SUMMARY:Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Join us each week for mindfulness meditation led by our very own Marion Lyman-Mersereau! \nMindfulness is non-judgmental awareness of the present moment or simply\, noticing what’s happening right now. We are often caught up in thinking; remembering the past or anticipating the future or conjuring up a fantasy world. Although thinking is an important part of being human we often miss the fullness of an experience by being stuck in our thinking\, often judgmental and reactive minds. Mindfulness can help us become better able to respond rather than react to life’s many situations as we learn to calm our busy minds. For more benefits of the practice see: What are the benefits of mindfulness?\n \nJOIN ON ZOOM\n\n“Mindfulness isnʻt difficult\, we just need to remember to do it.” – Sharon Salzberg \nOne morning\, when I was walking the dogs at Manoa Park\, I saw some litter near the stream. I handed my coffee cup to my husband saying\, “I can’t stand this.” When I returned with the litter and asked for my coffee\, I found he had drunk it. He replied to my complaints\, “I thought you said you couldn’t stand it.” I continued my haranguing\, “I was talking about the litter! You don’t even like coffee with cream!” and on and on.  All of a sudden I saw a brilliant rainbow which shifted me\, in that moment of presence\, from reacting with anger to responding with laughter at the miscommunication that had occurred. \nSome years ago I learned about mindfulness practice which was defined as non-judgmental awareness of the present moment or simply\, noticing what’s happening right now. At any given moment\, I discovered\, I can be present or pay attention to my senses including my emotions. In that moment of noticing I am mindful. \nI find I am often caught up in thinking\, remembering the past or anticipating the future or I conjure up a fantasy world. I am rarely present\, fully witnessing each moment with my senses or feelings. In the moment that I noticed the rainbow\, fully present with its ethereal beauty\, I became calmer and saner – not caught up in my petty complaints. \nAlthough thinking is an important part of being human I find I miss the fullness of an experience by being stuck in my head. On a recent hike with a friend\, after we’d caught up with our lives\, we walked without talking for quite awhile. Our awareness was drawn to the surrounding beauty\, birdsong\, cool mauka air\, and our breath. \nMindful moments like these help calm a busy mind and strengthen my ability to create\, to appreciate\, and more fully embrace life. \n—”Moment to Moment Awareness” by Marion Lyman-Mersereau (featured in the Midweek)
