SUMMARY:"No Dictators" Community Protest & Rally
DESCRIPTION:Faith Action Hawaiʻi is calling on communities of faith\, youth\, and all people of conscience to come together for a powerful public witness for peace and democracy on Saturday\, March 28. This is a chance to stand up for the values we believe in and demonstrate that our community will not remain silent in the face of injustice. There are various actions taking place in Honolulu that are connected to the No Kings events happening across the United States. Join in! \nPeace March – 9:30/10:15 AM (Thomas Square to Capitol)\n\nSponsored by ACLU Hawai‘i and Faith Action\n\nNo Dictators Protest & Rally – 11 AM – 1 PM (Hawai‘i State Capitol)\n\nThe No Dictators rally (called “No Kings” on the continent) is co-hosted by Indivisible Hawai‘i\, ACLU Hawai‘i\, HCIR (Hawai‘i Coalition for Immigrant Rights)\, Pride at Work\, and Hawai‘i J20.\n\nSinging Resistance\n\nSeeking singers to join in a community chorus! \nThere is a “singing resistance” program being planned for the end of the No Dictators rally happening at the Hawai‘i State Capitol on Saturday\, March 28. One of the co-organizers of the rally and a member of Indivisible East O‘ahu (a chapter of the national organization rallying communities to stand up for justice\, democracy and equality) reached out to Central Union. They shared\, “We were so moved with the way thousands in Minnesota brought their voices to the street to sing in solidarity with their neighbors being assaulted and terrorized by ICE. As a counter to the stress of hearing sirens\, horns honking and whistles blowing in alarm they brought the resolve\, peace and comfort of song.” \n“Since then the ‘singing resistance’ movement has spread across the country with thousands of groups forming. We are hoping to launch a similar effort here on the 28th. While Hawai‘i has gratefully not had to deal with the 24/7 trauma of ICE agents swarming our streets en masse as they did in MN\, they are here and have been taking our people\, people like Rogerio. \nWe’ll be introducing a song from Minnesota’s singing resistance songbook\, “No one is getting left behind this time” and a more ambitious piece by Patti Smith called “People have the Power” because we feel one of the most important things people could leave the rally with is confidence in our collective power to change things. \nWe are seeking singers to join our singing resistance that day\, and specifically to join in learning the chorus to “People Have the Power” so they can arrive ready to lead that part. \nThis won’t be a performance per se by any one choral group. We are simply seeking to gather a minimum of 150 singers ready to sing the chorus\, with the larger crowd gathered joining in at the refrain\, “People Have The Power!”. We have a lead singer ready to do Patti’s part. \nThere is magic that happens in hearing your own voice magnified by hundreds. We would love to have members of Central Union’s choir and congregation join us! We may schedule a few pop up practice sessions around town where we can find space to gather and sing. \nClick to view the songs that will be sung\, with lyrics and clips to listen to each one.
