SUMMARY:Learning Tree: Godly Play - Story of The Good Shepherd
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special time of Godly Play as part of a series of Learning Tree opportunities! \nCome hear this story!\nSunday\, August 25 – The Good Shepherd\nGodly Play is a Montessori-based program designed to teach children sacred stories from scripture\, help them become familiar with the rhythms of liturgy and the liturgical calendar\, and to nurture the inherent spirituality of children. Godly Play is the faith formation program we use with our keiki here at Central Union Church\, but it can be used in a variety of settings with a range of ages! \nGodly Play begins with the core stories of the Bible\, such as creation and the exodus. It then builds on these central narratives by telling more stories from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament throughout the year. Since Godly Play follows its own storyline\, children may hear different parts of the Bible than what their parents hear during the service. However\, Godly Play does mirror the lessons heard by the whole congregation during feast days and special liturgical seasons such as Advent and Easter. \nDuring this Learning Tree session\, our Director of Children’s Ministries\, Cayanna Herrera\, will lead us in a time of Godly Play\, geared toward adults\, that will help you reflect and engage with your faith at a deeper and more personal level. Our worship service on this Sunday will be closely linked to the Godly Play story that will be shared in the Learning Tree. (Cayanna will also share the Godly Play story in our online worship this Sunday.) Please join us and enjoy the opportunity to grow through this story!

SUMMARY:Talk Story: Empty Homes Tax
DESCRIPTION:Hawai‘i has a housing crisis. While housing is increasingly purchased as investments rather than housing\, ownership and rental costs rise. Money generated from the Empty Homes Tax can help alleviate the cost burdens associated with housing.\n\nCome learn about the tax in this presentation by HiHAC (Hawai‘i Housing Affordability Coalition) and see how we can support this effort to get more of our neighbors sheltered.\n\n\nWhat is the Empty-Homes Tax?\nA tax applied to vacant properties that are not used as a principal residence\nWhy should we care?\nHousing has been increasingly purchased as an investment instead of for housing. This in turn has resulted in rising ownership and rental costs. Money generated from the empty homes tax can help alleviate the cost burdens associated with housing.\nWho should know about this? Who’s most affected?\nEveryone! All those who are struggling from high housing costs may benefit. Additionally\, those (and only those) who own any vacant or seasonal (airbnb) properties will be affected by this tax.\nWhat will we learn/do in this presentation?\nYou will learn about the tax\, how it’s been implemented\, how it can help provide affordable housing\, and ways to get involved with the movement.\n\n\n\nRSVPs are not required but appreciated! RSVP HERE\n\nHosted by Central Union Community Ministry and Faith Action Hawai‘i in partnership with HiHAC.

SUMMARY:Bible Study: “What the Bible Says (and Doesn’t Say) about Easter”
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a time of Bible study\, learning\, and discussion with our guest teacher\, Rev. Dr. Donald Schmidt\, who is a leading voice in progressive studies of our scriptures! Pastor Donald will invite us to read the texts anew and listen for what our Stillspeaking God is saying to us today. Each study will stand on its own and ALL are welcome\, so come as you are able!\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 4 – “Surprising Stories of New Testament Women”\n\n\nFebruary 18 – “What the Bible Says (and Doesn’t Say) about Easter”\n\n\n\n\nABOUT OUR GUEST TEACHER\n\n\n\nDonald Schmidt recently retired after some 40 years in active parish ministry\, so he could devote himself full-time to his first love: telling the stories of the Bible. In that process – which he tends to fill with humour and a sense of wit – Schmidt is eager to point out to it that often what we think – or have been told – the Bible says is not in fact always the real story. In a series of books (10 so far) written for progressive Christians\, Donald Schmidt invites us to lay aside traditional understandings and read the Bible with fresh eyes and an open heart. Schmidt has served churches in Canada and the US and also served for a time in staff with the Hawai‘i Conference United Church of Christ. He currently lives in Penticton\, British Columbia\, Canada.

Dr. Karen Georgia Thompson as she passes through Honolulu this month! SUMMARY:Budget Info Session
DESCRIPTION:Come to ask your questions about the Budget (FYE 7/31/24) and the proposed Amendment to the Bylaws which will be voted on by members at the August 27th Annual Budget Meeting. \nWe encourage you to review the following information and documents prior to the info session and budget meeting. \nABOUT THE BUDGET\nIn its July 29th meeting\, the Council approved the proposed budget (for the fiscal year from August 1\, 2023\, through July 31\, 2024) prepared by CUC Treasurer\, David Yee\, assisted by Comptroller\, Angie Barboza\, for presentation to the Congregation for consideration and approval at this upcoming Annual Budget Meeting. \nAs a reminder\, the prior budget approved by the Congregation earlier this year (on January 29\, 2023)\, was for the 7-month “stub” fiscal year that began on January 1\, 2023 and ended on July 31\, 2023. This was due to the recent alignment of our Church fiscal year with the Preschool fiscal year. As David Yee explained previously\, with the start of the new fiscal year on August 1\, 2023\, we will be back to a full 12-month fiscal year. \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nBUDGET OVERVIEW\nBUDGET DETAIL\n~ ~ ~ ~ ~ \nABOUT THE BYLAWS AMENDMENT\nCurrently\, our Bylaws require (1) before the end of August\, an Annual Budget Meeting for CUC Members to review and approve the budget for the fiscal year\, and (2) before the end of May\, an Annual Membership Meeting for CUC Members to elect Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. Given the recent alignment of the Annual Budget Meeting with CUC’s fiscal year\, the Council concluded it would be beneficial to combine the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting to be held on or before the last day of September of each year for the purposes of considering and approving the budget for the fiscal year\, electing Council members who are to be elected by CUC Membership\, and transacting such other business as may properly come before the meeting. \nThe Council believes this change\, which will allow for all routine\, annual business of CUC to be addressed in a single meeting\, is a more comprehensive and efficient way for CUC Members to exercise their reserved rights under our Bylaws. Consequently\, the Council will be presenting a proposed Bylaws Amendment to CUC Members for consideration and approval at the Annual Budget Meeting that combines the Annual Membership Meeting and the Annual Budget Meeting into a single meeting as aforesaid. \nCLICK TO VIEW:\nPROPOSED AMENDMENT TO BYLAWS

SUMMARY:Women’s League Scholarship Awardee Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please come – One and ALL\, to meet and greet the newest recipients of the Kenneth and Doris Rewick Educational Fund and the Ruth C. Scudder Scholarship Fund. \nThe Women’s League would be THRILLED if ALL members of the congregation would come to meet these awardees.  It would be a blessing to have these students come to know the fellowship and ‘ohana of Central Union Church that has made their grants and scholarships possible.  Please save the date\, drop in after/before worship to say hello\, shake some hands\, and have some refreshments.  We only ask that you bring your WELCOMING SMILE! \nABOUT\nThe Women’s League of Central Union Church established an educational aid grant in 1968 and later renamed the fund to honor Senior Minister Dr. Kenneth Rewick and former Central Union Church Preschool Director Mrs. Doris Rewick. \nThe Rewick Educational Fund is awarded to students from Hawai‘i who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment in any accredited school for undergraduate or graduate college training or for other specialized training beyond high school.  The students may be full time\, part time\, or on-line students. \nThe Ruth C. Scudder Scholarship Fund was established by the Women’s Society of Central Union Church in 1915 in memory of Mrs. Ruth C. Scudder\, who was the wife of former CUC Pastor Dr. Doremus Scudder.  This scholarship is awarded to a woman of Christian affiliation from Hawai‘i\, with preference to the United Church of Christ\, and who is a student in the University of Hawai‘i system\, with preference being given to upperclassmen. \nBoth of these grants are awarded to students based on character\, scholarship\, evidence of financial need\, and community service. \nVIEW A LIST OF THE 2023-2024 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES

SUMMARY:Lenten Series: Taste and See
DESCRIPTION:Taste and See: Cultivating Attentiveness with Our Senses\nLent is a season of reflection\, repentance\, and preparation as we prepare for the new life celebrated on Easter Sunday. In our busy culture\, the Lenten season is a gift. It offers us a time to slow down\, breathe deep\, and focus on our spiritual practices – those habits that draw us nearer to God and help us to sense the Spirit’s movement in our lives. After three years of pandemic in our world and much transition in our church\, we can all benefit from intentional time to “practice the presence of God\,” to borrow a phrase from Brother Lawrence. \nJoin us during the midweek from 6:30-8:00 PM in the Women’s Building! We will share a simple meal with discussion led by Pastor Mary and Pastor Dave\, and we’ll learn tangible exercises to help us cultivate attentiveness to God. All are welcome! Each week’s gathering stands alone\, so come whenever you are able. \nFifth Wednesday\nTHEME: Present to God through Sight\, Vision\nTEXT: Psalm 130\, Psalm 119:18 “Open my eyes\, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”
