We are partnering with our sister churches United Church of Christ Judd Street and Nu‘uanu Congregational Church to walk/ride in the Honolulu Pride Parade, an event hosted by the Hawai‘i LGBT Legacy Foundation during the month of October, when “PRIDE” is celebrated in Honolulu.
At Central Union Church where “We Engage and Embrace ALL as we seek to Embody Christ!”, we believe in a God of extravagant love and welcome that extends to our LGBTQ+ siblings. Join us to share this love and proclaim that each person, whatever their sexual orientation and gender identity, is beloved by God as they are!
When: Saturday, October 21
- 7:15 AM – Trolley riders and people wanting to carpool meet at CUC Punahou parking lot. (If you are not there by 7:30 AM, you will be left behind. Please meet us at the Magic Island parking lot.) Want to ride the trolley? Read below*.
- 8:00 AM – All parade participants must be lined up by group in their assigned spaces in the Magic Island parking lot. We will use this time before the parade to decorate the trolley!
- 9:00 AM – Parade starts at Atkinson Drive/Ala Moana Boulevard
Parade Route (about 2.6 miles): The Parade will kick off at 9:00 AM from Magic Island, travel along Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalākaua Avenue, and end at Kapiʻolani Park. (Ala Moana Park in Magic Island ➡️ right onto Ala Moana Park Dr. ➡️ right onto Ala Moana Blvd via Atkinson entrance ➡️ right onto Kalakaua Ave – parade ends on Kalākaua Ave at Kapahulu Ave.)
*RIDING THE TROLLEY
We will share one trolley amongst three churches. Space is very limited! Seats are currently full and some of us will need to take turns walking and riding the trolley. If you would like to participate but are unable to walk the distance, please inquire about reserving a seat! Contact kristen-young@centralunionchurch.org.
WALK IN THE PARADE
Walking is encouraged for those who are able! Small, self-propelled ‘vehicles’ like bicycles or wagons for keiki are allowed. Marchers can meet in the parade lineup at Ala Moana Beach Park in the Magic Island parking lot.
*** Please note that parking is very limited at Ala Moana Beach Park.
Consider alternative public parking lots such as Kewalo Basin, Kaka‘ako Waterfront, Kapi‘olani Park (at the end of the parade) and/or ride-share service (Uber, Lyft), carpool, bus, walking or taxi down to Ala Moana Beach Park.
NOTES:
- Honolulu Pride is a family friendly event. All attire, music, and decorations should be appropriate for all ages.
- Wear your brightest, most joyful colors and accessories!
- Please plan for high temperatures and minimal shade. (Bring your own water bottle, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, etc.)
- Parade walkers will continue on Kalākaua past the Honolulu Zoo and disband in Kapiʻolani Park.
- Parade vehicles will turn left on Monsarrat Avenue and riders may disembark there. Trolley riders will be taken back to Central Union at the end of the parade.
HELP NEEDED!
Volunteer to help with transportation to and from the event!
WE NEED HELP with transportation before and after the parade. Parking will be very limited. Walkers will need to be dropped off at Ala Moana Beach Park (Magic Island) by 8:30 AM and picked up from Kapi‘olani Park around 10:30 AM once the parade ends. Can you support CUC’s participation in the parade by shuttling church members between the church and the parade start/finish line? If you’re willing and able to help, please contact kristen-young@centralunionchurch.org.
