Sermon Series: The Lord’s Prayer
Based on Sermon 5 of 7: “Forgive Us Our Debts As We Forgive Our Debtors”
Forgiveness is the heartbeat of the gospel. When we pray, “Forgive us our debts,” we confess that we are not self-sufficient. We owe more than we can pay. We carry burdens we cannot bear alone. Yet God’s mercy meets us at the cross, where Jesus prays, “Father, forgive them.” This is forgiveness in agony, not theory—grace poured out when nails pierce flesh. If heaven’s love can forgive in that moment, then forgiveness is not weakness; it is the weapon of heaven.
But forgiveness is never cheap. It does not erase truth or silence wounds. It names the pain and chooses mercy over resentment. To forgive is to break the chains of bitterness and step into freedom—the freedom to live as children of grace. This week, let forgiveness be your practice. Tell the truth. Ask for mercy. Offer release. When you forgive, heaven touches earth. When you release, chains fall. Let your life echo the prayer you speak: Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
