Hawai‘i has a housing crisis. While housing is increasingly purchased as investments rather than housing, ownership and rental costs rise. Money generated from the Empty Homes Tax can help alleviate the cost burdens associated with housing.
Come learn about the tax in this presentation by HiHAC (Hawai‘i Housing Affordability Coalition) and see how we can support this effort to get more of our neighbors sheltered.
- What is the Empty-Homes Tax?
A tax applied to vacant properties that are not used as a principal residence - Why should we care?
Housing has been increasingly purchased as an investment instead of for housing. This in turn has resulted in rising ownership and rental costs. Money generated from the empty homes tax can help alleviate the cost burdens associated with housing. - Who should know about this? Who’s most affected?
Everyone! All those who are struggling from high housing costs may benefit. Additionally, those (and only those) who own any vacant or seasonal (airbnb) properties will be affected by this tax. - What will we learn/do in this presentation?
You will learn about the tax, how it’s been implemented, how it can help provide affordable housing, and ways to get involved with the movement.
